Glassware Cleaning Options Explained

Posted by gourmet coffee snob on 31 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: Coffee, Coffee Tips, Health

There is nothing better than relaxing with a nice glass or two of wine at the end of the day. The fun though soon ends when you have to get round to cleaning them and getting them looking spotless again. Dishwashers should be out of the question as they can do untold damage to fine glasses very easily. So which are your best options?

Clean by hand. You could always choose to wash your wine glasses by hand in some warm soapy water. This will get them clean but often this leaves them with water smears and a soapy taste when you next come to use them. On top of this, the lip of the glass often gets left with a scum rim around the lip if they are left to dry on a rack.

Glass cloth. If you are an avid wine drinker then you might want to invest in a high quality wine glass cloth. Made from microfibre technology, the cloths do not do any damage to the glass and remove almost all substances. A great quality is that unlike most other cloths, they are free from fluff and or fibre shedding. They can also be used on all glasses and dinnerware, and when they get dirty themselves you can stick them in the washing machine and they’ll come out brand new.

Glass cleaning balls. For wine enthusiasts who like the latest innovations, there is always the option of the amazing cleaning metal ball bearings. The little balls are made of stainless steel and can be used again and again. If you place a little bit of water in the glass along with a handful of these balls then swirl them around the glass, they take off all the dirt on the inside of the glass, even in any hard to reach parts. After they have been used they require just a quick rinse under water before they ready to be used once more.

If you are handy, and have always wanted a wall mounted wine rack, you  can easily build your own, cause this is indeed a very easy job to do.

The directions I am about to write below for a  wall mounted wine rack is made by using a used kitchen cabinet. You can always  get old cabinet at a garage sale, or perhaps you can use your own old one.

Simple  Steps to Creating Your Own Wall Mounted Wine Rack:

* Take the door off of the cabinet. It’s important that you take any  brackets as well as the shelves out of the cabinet.

* Measure the height of the  cabinet to find out how many shelves your wall wine rack should have.

* Using a saw and a 1×6 board, cut shelves for your Wall Mounted Wine  Rack. You will need to make a front and back for each shelf.

* You  need to drill 1″ holes to create the nect holders in the center of the board.  Find out how many bottles of wine will fit accross the width of that cabinet.

* Repeat step 4 by using a 4″ hole cutter for the rear shelves. These  ones will go in the back of your wall mounted wine rack.

* Finish the shelves and the cabinet using a paint or stain and  liquor.

* Once your paint or stain is dry it is time to assemble the Wall  Mounted Wine Rack. Use brackets to mount the shelves in the front and in the  back of your cabinet.

* Once everything is in place you will be able to mount your wine rack  on the wall.

Choose your favorite bottle of wine to put in your wine rack. Your  family will be surprised with your craftmanship, and you will absolutely proud  of yourself. Perhaps you want to  celebrate it by drinking your syrah wine.

Perhaps people will  start asking you how you created such a good wine rack out of an old cabinet. Who would think a new wine glass racks was actually made from  kitchen cabinet?

Kicking back with a glass of wine at the end of a hard day is lots of peoples idea of heaven. It’s not so fun however having to clean the glass afterwards, especially when trying to get them smudge and smear free. Dishwashers are not really an option as they can damage the glass and make them go cloudy, so what other options do you have available to you?

Clean by hand. You could always choose to wash the wine glasses by hand in some warm soapy water. This method does technically get the glasses clean but leaves all sorts of unsightly marks and smudges on them, and there is an argument the soap can ruin the taste of the next wine that gets put in the glass. Additionally, if you place them on a rack to dry they often get left with a layer of soap scum around on the lip.

Glass cloth. Those people of like a drink quite often might like to get hold of a special wine glass cleaning cloth. They are very gentle on glassware due to their microfibre make-up, and yet they clean very effectively. A great quality is that unlike most other cloths, they are free from fluff and or fibre shedding. They can also be used on all glasses and dinnerware, and when they get dirty themselves you can stick them in the washing machine and they’ll come out brand new.

Glass cleaning balls. If a glass of wine really is your thing then you have to get yourself some glass-cleaning metal balls. Because the balls are constructed from stainless steel they will never rust and will last you a lifetime. If you place a little bit of water in the glass along with a handful of these balls then swirl them around the glass, they take off all the dirt on the inside of the glass, even in any hard to reach parts.  You can then rinse the balls off with water and they are good to go again.
