German Cooking Traditions

Posted by gourmet coffee snob on 30 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Coffee, Coffee Tips, Food And Beverage, Gourmet Coffee Snob Sez, SpotaJava Coffee

German food has a key role in the everyday events of German culture and traditions. Most celebrations, whether they are in public or private, will be accompanied by exquisite food, and great tasting beer.

German food varies significantly from region to region. Even individual town and villages have become famous for a particular type of delicacy. For example, the Nurnberger bratwurst is a famous sausage from the Nurnberg region. Whilst Munchner Weiswurst is a famous delicacy from Munich. These well known dishes are available at the most interesting of places. You can get them at the local market place, or even at the train station.

There is also great rivalry between the regions as to who has the best German recipes. Strong regional rivalry has always existed between the north and south of the country. There is always a healthy banter between the local citizens and claims for the title of best food recipes.

The variety of magnificant sausages and sauerkraut from Germany is well known.  However there are a huge amount of traditional German delicacies on offer that most people of other nations wouldn’t even be aware of. Among them are various of potato salads and potato dumplings dishes, that are usually accompanied by the most unique flavored meat dishes. Of little recognition is the number of fresh salad recipes available, accompanied by deliscious salad dressings.

And so as not to forget those who enjoy the sweet foods in life, the variety and quality of cakes and pastries is unrivalled. Most cafes will offer the most deliscious layer cakes that simply melt in your mouth, and are unrivalled anywhere around the world.

It is regrettable that the once well known cooking skills used to prepare German food, is now on the decline. With the emergence of large food outlets, the hard work has been taken out of the traditional food preparation, by offering “ready to cook” German dumplings, sauerkraut, and even sauerbraten etc. Fine pastries and amazing cakes are readily available from even small bakery outlets.

The result is that the convenience generation has all but forgotten the skills and techniques required to produce a traditional German meal.

There are strong ties between German food and the German culture. Unless a concerted effort is made to revitalize the art of German cooking, then German food culture may be at risk. This is an important concern for those residing in Germany. These issues are also being faced by Germans living in other parts of the world, as well as their descendants.

To ensure that the German food culture survives, we must make concerted and proactive efforts. Therefore it is important to teach young ones the cooking techniques and recipes of old. The benefits in doing so is that the German traditions and customs will continue to thrive.

Acai berries

Acai berries are the latest rage in the diet world after their big Oprah appearance, but what exactly is so big about these little berries? Here’s a bit of background for you: in Brazil, acai is pretty commonplace and has been for some time. They use the juice and pulp of açaí fruits are used in juice blends and smoothies and up North, they serve acai in gourds called with tapioca. Açaí is also popular as an ice cream flavor and is used in flavored liqueur as well. In the diet world, the acai berry is used much differently and it doesn’t involve alcohol or sugary treats. Acai is promoted for its antioxidant effects, which surpasses blueberries and red wine, and advocates of the acai berry claim that it will do you lots of good, enhancing general well-being and vitality and supporting weight loss. Acai berries are also said to have other benefits such as improving digestion, detoxifying the body, boosting immunity, supporting cardiovascular health, increasing mental clarity, enhancing vision, reducing insomnia, and slowing down the aging process—not bad for a berry and probably helpful for most anyone considering the claims made on its behalf. With regard to the effects of acai berry on weight loss, the berry has a combination of essential fatty acids, amino acids and phytosterols that purportedly work together to improve metabolism, enhance digestion, and reduce appetite but the studies have not been done yet to be certain. We do know that the acai berry contains omega fatty acids like that in fish oil, olive oil and flaxseed which are known to have many health benefits like lowering triglycerides, and instead of being stored as fat, they are used by the liver to “kick-start” the metabolism. So is acai praiseworthy in terms of weight loss? Well, if you’re starting slow with weight loss or if you’ve reached a plateau in your weight loss, adding some form of acai to your diet might be just get you over the hump. Plus, the fiber content in acai berry may help you to feel fuller faster and cut back on cravings and needless snacking.

spotajava coffee

Trying to save money in these lean times, more of us are brewing our java at home.

Starbucks, the premium coffee shop chain, is feeling the effects, reporting a 77 percent drop in quarterly profits this spring.

Oh, people are still buying Starbucks.

"Some of our hottest bagged coffee brands include Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts," says Tracy Pawelski, spokeswoman for Giant Food Stores, which has nine stores in Lancaster County.

Local Starbucks chains declined to comment on the effects on their business here, referring all calls to their corporate office.

"People are mentioning that though they're cutting back, they still like their coffee," says Sara Kauffman, owner of the New Holland Coffee Company.

Some are treating themselves at home.

Giant has seen a 15 percent increase in premium coffee sales at the supermarket chain, Pawelski says.

Weis Markets, which has 14 stores here, also has seen an uptick in coffee sales, spokesman Dennis Curtin says.

"With the way the economy is going, it's not unusual to see customers staying home and preparing meals and that extends to coffee," he says.

Stauffers of Kissel Hill also has noticed the trend at its three stores here.

The other trend at Stauffers and Weis is increasing sales of "K-cups," small, plastic single-cup coffee pods that are dropped into machines that brew one cup at a time.

A National Coffee Association poll from earlier this year showed that, among people who said they had drunk coffee the previous day, 83 percent made it at home, up 5 percent from the previous year.

In another recent poll, 20 percent of those surveyed said they visited coffee chains less frequently, according to Booz & Company, a management consulting firm.

Local coffee shops say they are holding their own due to expanding their business and loyal customers.

The Brew House & Bistro in Ephrata does catering, which helps to bolster the business, said owner Mary Alice Haws.

She said customers are cutting back, but not going away completely.

"Instead of having a latte every day, they'll say I'll only have two this week," she says.

You Will Enjoy The Numerous Benefits Of Using Digital Kitchen Food Scales

Many of us enjoy cooking but often have times when a new recipe fails to live up to its promise. Baking seems to cause this experience more than other types of cooking. It can be really frustrating when you follow the recipe carefully and end up with a flop. Once thing professional bakers know that you may not is how important it is to use the right digital kitchen scales.

Often we think that they are just for professional chefs to create intricate delicacies. But the truth is that they can be used by just about anyone for any recipe. Using a digital kitchen scale can make baking a much more enjoyable and successful project. Although you may not believe that a digital kitchen scale can make all that much difference it is worth it to give it a try. Baking requires that there be an exact proportion of various ingredients in the mix.

Digital cooking scales allow you to measure all your ingredients with precision. Although we usually try and measure carefully while baking using measuring cups they will not give the same level of accuracy as you will find with a digital kitchen scale. Digital kitchen scales will give you accurate measurement every time. They are simple to use and you don’t need to think about how compressed the flour is or if there was any flour left in the cup from the previous scoop to change the exact measurement.

While digital kitchen scales will be your new favorite tool for baking they can really be used for all types of food prep. Often a recepie will call for an ingredient by weight and determining the right amount can be a real challenge. This is especially true when it comes to meats and cheeses. There is no more guess work when you use a digital kitchen scale just delicious food coming from your kitchen.

How to Make Sushi at Home

Posted by gourmet coffee snob on 29 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Coffee, Coffee Tips, Food And Beverage, Gourmet Coffee Snob Sez, SpotaJava Coffee

Sushi is one of the most delicious foods you can eat anywhere. Most of the time it is enjoyed in fine Japanese restaurants.

But sometimes people want to make great sushi for the home. I should know.  I own a Sushi Restaurant Murrieta and get asked all the time by my customers. They always try to find out what the secret is to great sushi that they can make at home?

I always joke and tell them they can’t and they need to always come to my Sushi Restaurant.  But seriously, if you want some great tips to try and make some great sushi at home listen up.

First of all have fun.  Remember, you are not trying to make this for a Sushi restaurant Temecula full of people. You more than likely are making it for relatives or friends.

Remember you can have great tasting food without it looking great. So relax because you have to remember there will be a learning curve.

For the rice, remember it has to be sticky. So if you prefer not to have sticky rice all over, make sure you wash your hands a lot.

Another great tip is to try and not make the biggest sushi in the world.Yes all the ingredients taste wonderful. But if you try and stuff too many ingredients into one roll it will be a disaster. You are going to have non rolling rolls. You are going to have all the ingredients spilling all over the place because it is overstuffed.

Just do not do it.

Fourth tip, be gentle.  Resist the temptation to use too much force.  When you are making the Sushi all it takes is a gentle rolling. To much force with your fingers and the rolls end up looking funny or have an odd shape.

Final tip is using of knives.  Obviously making sushi requires small pieces of fish. Well if you don’t want the fish to tear, moisten the knife.  This allows you to cut into the knife evenly.  You will have nicer cuts of fish that you can put into the sushi roll.

There you go.  Follow these few steps and you will be making great sushi like at my Sushi Restaurant Lake Elsinore.

Making Sushi doesn’t have to be hard. It can be enjoyable, fun, and of course delicious.
