You don’t have to eliminate all the foods you enjoy in order to cook more healthfully. Most natural food products are intrinsically healthy. What makes them unhealthy is how people prepare and cook them.
Cooking methods aren’t all created equal. In its natural form, most food is loaded with vitamins and essential nutrients. But if you cook it the wrong way, many of the nutrients will disappear. How then can you make great meals without losing all the nutritional benefits of the food?
Heart healthy cooking is really quite simple. There’s no need to spend time looking for special recipes. There are many ways that you can cook your favorite foods in a heart healthy manner. These methods will allow you to keep all of the natural nutrients and flavors of the food without adding salt or unnecessary fats.
Here are some tips that can help you turn your meals into healthy, wholesome food that your whole family will enjoy.
Stir fry cooking is a tasty and easy way to include healthy food in your menu. With stir fry, small pieces of food are cooked in a large wok or a non-stick frying pan. This can include all sorts of vegetables, thin slices of lean meat and seasonings as desired.
You only need a small amount of oil to make a stir fry. Because you’re constantly moving the food around, it won’t stick to the wok. When it’s finished, add some rice or pasta and you’ll have a complete, healthy meal.
Another simple change you can make for healthier cooking is by cooking meat on a rack in a roasting pan. As the fat and juices drip away from the meat, the rack keeps them at the bottom of the pan. Therefore, the meat isn’t sitting in and soaking up its fats as it cooks. To keep your meat moist and full of flavor, baste it with wine or lemon juice instead of using the drippings.
You could also try changing the way you cook vegetables. A lot of people cook them for too long a time, which destroys much of their nutritional value. And often they make the situation worse by slathering on excessive amounts of butter and salt. If you learn to cook vegetables properly, you’ll find there’s no need to cover up the taste with salt and fat.
When you cook healthfully, your goal should be to eat the foods you love and not feel like you’re being deprived. You don’t need fancy cooking utensils or expensive recipe collections. All you need to do is make some simple changes to the way you prepare your food.

So it’s almost Valentines day and you’re planning to cook a romantic meal for your date. What could be better? Just the two of you alone together, good food, lots of wine, candles and romantic music playing quietly in the background. You can’t wait. But there’s a problem – you haven’t got a clue where to start or how to go about it. And with the big day creeping closer and closer, you’re beginning to wonder if maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all. Fear not, here are a few pointers to help make your evening as enchanting as you dreamed it would be.
Preparation: You could take a leaf from the boy scouts book here. If you want your whole evening to go without any problems you need to be prepared. Don’t leave everything to the last minute, think about what will make it a night to remember for you and your date. If you want to go all out with a romantic setting, you’ll need candles, flowers and posh dishes and wine glasses. Get it all ready and set out before you start cooking so you don’t have to worry about it.
Food: Firstly and most importantly, know your limits and don’t go over the top. It’s better to cook one really good main course than to stretch yourself too far and end up with a three course meal that you’ll struggle to eat and enjoy. As for deciding on a menu it’s important to know a bit about your date’s likes and dislikes, even on a first date. If you serve up a big steak only to find they’re a devoted vegetarian, well let’s say that’s going to be painfully embarrassing at best and you probably won’t see them again any time soon! Once you know what they like – and what they really don’t – you can choose a dish to impress them. You don’t have to go overboard, a simple but tasty main course followed by posh ice cream or a chocolate fondue and strawberries to share would be fine – and don’t forget chocolate is supposed to have aphrodisiacal qualities!
Wine: Finding the right wine to go with your chosen food can be a bit confusing if you don’t know much about fine wines, but there are a few simple tips that should help. The easiest way to find a wine that will compliment your meal is to match the colours – red for meat, white for fish and so on. If you’re serving a light meal choose a light wine, if it’s spicy go sweet. Enjoying a glass of wine with your meal is almost as much about presentation as the wine itself. If you’re serving white wine or rose make sure it’s chilled in advance, and always serve it in your best wine glasses – good quality crystal glasses make all the difference, and they make it feel special too. Remember your date probably won’t know much more than you about quality wines, they may bring a bottle with them and it’s likely they’ll have been fretting over it as much as you have!
