Acai berries are the latest rage in the diet world after their big Oprah appearance, but what exactly is so big about these little berries? Here’s a bit of background for you: in Brazil, acai is pretty commonplace and has been for some time. They use the juice and pulp of açaí fruits are used in juice blends and smoothies and up North, they serve acai in gourds called with tapioca. Açaí is also popular as an ice cream flavor and is used in flavored liqueur as well. In the diet world, the acai berry is used much differently and it doesn’t involve alcohol or sugary treats. Acai is promoted for its antioxidant effects, which surpasses blueberries and red wine, and advocates of the acai berry claim that it will do you lots of good, enhancing general well-being and vitality and supporting weight loss. Acai berries are also said to have other benefits such as improving digestion, detoxifying the body, boosting immunity, supporting cardiovascular health, increasing mental clarity, enhancing vision, reducing insomnia, and slowing down the aging process—not bad for a berry and probably helpful for most anyone considering the claims made on its behalf. With regard to the effects of acai berry on weight loss, the berry has a combination of essential fatty acids, amino acids and phytosterols that purportedly work together to improve metabolism, enhance digestion, and reduce appetite but the studies have not been done yet to be certain. We do know that the acai berry contains omega fatty acids like that in fish oil, olive oil and flaxseed which are known to have many health benefits like lowering triglycerides, and instead of being stored as fat, they are used by the liver to “kick-start” the metabolism. So is acai praiseworthy in terms of weight loss? Well, if you’re starting slow with weight loss or if you’ve reached a plateau in your weight loss, adding some form of acai to your diet might be just get you over the hump. Plus, the fiber content in acai berry may help you to feel fuller faster and cut back on cravings and needless snacking.
